Queen Elizabeth II was saluted by Harry Styles during a portion of his Madison Square Garden concert on Thursday night. Hours before Styles went on stage, the Queen passed away. She had served just over 70 years as queen of the United Kingdom and was 96 years old when she died.

After Queen Elizabeth’s death, Elton John wasn’t the only British star to pay tribute. He paused his Toronto concert and said, “I’m 75, and she’s been with me all my life, and I feel very sad that she won’t be with me anymore, but I’m glad she’s at peace,”
Back in 2012, Styles performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the fan-favorite One Direction. He met Queen Elizabeth that same year and shook hands with Prince Harry in 2017.
On Thursday, with the death of Queen Elizabeth, Britain saw the end to its longest monarchy. Her son, Charles III—the former Prince of Wales—succeeded her as king. In his first speech to the public since becoming monarch, King Charles expressed deep sadness over his mother’s untimely death.
“As the Queen herself did with such unswerving devotion, I too now solemnly pledge myself, throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the Constitutional principles at the heart of our nation,” King Charles said “And wherever you may live in the United Kingdom, or in the Realms and territories across the world, and whatever may be your background or beliefs, I shall endeavor to serve you with loyalty, respect, and love, as I have throughout my life.” The Queen’s funeral is scheduled for Monday, Sept 19 at 11 a.m local time (6 a.m ET) at Westminster Abbey.
