Black Lightning is back, baby and he’s more brutal than ever before. Whether or not that’s a good thing remains to be seen but the season premiere is exciting enough that we’re eager to find out. In one of the smartest decisions that could have been made Black Lightning decides to pick up a year later. It’s been a year since Henderson’s death and since everything else went down in Freeland. In this time Lynn has been developing her drug to get Gravedigger’s powers. Anissa and Jen are operating as heroes full time and Jefferson? Well… Jefferson is going through some stuff and he’s become bitter and angry. This makes sense, Jefferson has been through a lot but for him to purposely cripple people? That’s pretty hardcore, man. Here’s our review for ‘The Book Of Reconstruction: Chapter one’
It makes sense that Jefferson is spiraling a little. Why would he want to be a hero in Freeland with everything that’s happened? Maybe electrocuting those cops was a bit too far, and the whole scene might have been a little too on the nose… But when we take into account what happened over the summer since last season ended I think it’s warranted. Black Lightning is perfectly positioned to deal with those issues and it does so head-on, which is definitely a point in favor of the show. His life is completely falling apart around him and now he has a new detective on his case to deal with and we’ll have to see where this all goes.
Anissa is still dealing with Grace’s coma and she and her sister have been doing some heroic stuff on their own without their dad. Anissa remains pretty much unchanged but Jen has grown even more cocky and overconfident. The episode actually ends on a cliffhanger in terms of Jen, but she probably has plot armor so I’m not worried.
Lyn is doing her own thing in the lab, trying to create a drug to give her powers. Her story is interacting directly with Tobias’. We knew this was coming, however, based on the previous seasons’ finale. Ironically, Tobias is the one being praised as a hero. We also have Lala doing his stuff with the 100, but that’s whatever, to be honest.
All-in-all I quite enjoyed the episode. This darker turn for Jefferson’s character is compelling and I’m excited to see how they end this season. This is Black Lightning‘s swan song and Jefferson might not be remembered as a hero. That’s okay, as long as the show continues its strong story.
